Nuclear Order in Collapse—And What We Must Do Now
Peace Economy Project Statement on the U.S.-Israel Strikes on Iran and the Collapsing Nuclear Order
Peace Economy Project strongly condemns the recent joint U.S.-Israeli military strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities. These actions mark a dangerous escalation and represent a profound failure of international diplomacy and nuclear order. Rather than eliminating the threat of nuclear proliferation, such strikes have further destabilized the region, undermined trust in international norms, and pushed the world closer to the brink of nuclear catastrophe.
At a moment when global cooperation is urgently needed, the erosion of nuclear nonproliferation efforts—most notably the continued breakdown of the Iran Nuclear Deal (JCPOA) and threats to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT)—puts us all at risk.
We reject the growing normalization of unilateral military action and preemptive strikes that bypass diplomatic processes and international law. We reject the hypocrisy of nuclear-armed states that demand nonproliferation from others while maintaining and modernizing their own arsenals. And we reject the notion that peace can be built through coercion.
The world does not need more nuclear weapons—it needs more diplomacy, nuclear order, more restraint, and more investment in peace.
Now is the time to rebuild trust, renew disarmament efforts, and hold those in power accountable to international law and global safety.
