Peace Economy Project Joins Global Civil Society in Urging the UN to Take Decisive Action on Women, Peace, and Security
We are proud to announce that the Peace Economy Project has joined 627 other civil society organizations from 110 countries in signing an open letter to the UN Security Council, calling for urgent action on Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) ahead of the annual Security Council Open Debate on October 24th. This letter, organized by the NGO Working Group on Women, Peace, and Security, represents a collective demand for stronger global efforts to protect and promote the rights of women in conflict zones around the world.
The letter outlines 10 key areas where we are urging the Security Council and UN Member States to take meaningful steps:
1. Prevent, avert, and end conflict – Prioritize peacebuilding and prevention efforts that stop conflicts before they escalate.
2. Reform the Security Council – Make the Council more effective and responsive to the needs of women in conflict zones.
3. Stop arms transfers – Cease the transfer of arms that could be used to commit acts of gender-based violence.
4. Defend women’s human rights – Ensure that women’s rights are upheld and protected in all conflict-affected areas.
5. Advance reproductive justice – Promote access to reproductive health services and protect the reproductive rights of women in conflict zones.
6. Insist on women at the table – Include women in all peace and security negotiations and decision-making processes.
7. Support principled humanitarian action – Ensure that humanitarian responses to conflict and crises prioritize women’s needs.
8. Demand justice and accountability – Hold perpetrators of gender-based violence accountable for their actions.
9. Stand with feminist movements – Empower feminist movements and women-led organizations working on the ground to create change.
10. Fund peace, not war – Shift funding priorities from military spending to peacebuilding and conflict prevention efforts.
As we approach the 25th anniversary of Resolution 1325, which first addressed the impact of war on women and their critical role in peace processes, the global community is being called to reflect on the promises made and the progress still needed. Women and girls in conflict and crisis zones across the globe are counting on the international community to turn these promises into action.
