But according to leading arms control experts, including Harvard professor Matthew Bunn, Golden Dome, this expensive and ambitious initiative could actually make the world <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/golden-dome-dangers-an-arms-control-expert-explains-how-trumps-missile-defense-threatens-to-make-the-us-less-safe-258048\" title=\"\">more dangerous<\/a><\/strong>, not less.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Trump claims the Golden Dome will offer nearly 100% protection against ballistic, cruise, hypersonic, and even space-based missile attacks. But decades of international security research\u2014and lived history\u2014tell us that this kind of missile defense rarely lives up to its promises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Instead of ensuring peace, the Golden Dome is likely to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/carnegieendowment.org\/russia-eurasia\/politika\/2025\/05\/golden-dome-missile-russia?lang=en\" title=\"\">Provoke a new arms race<\/a><\/strong>, pushing nations like Russia and China to rapidly expand their nuclear arsenals<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chathamhouse.org\/2025\/05\/trumps-golden-dome-plan-threatens-fuel-new-arms-race\" title=\"\">Undermine existing arms control agreements<\/a><\/strong>, such as the soon-expiring New START Treaty<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chinausfocus.com\/peace-security\/us-golden-dome-threatens-global-security\" title=\"\">Destabilize global security<\/a><\/strong>, by giving the illusion that the U.S. can strike first and hide behind a shield<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\ud83d\udea8 The Danger of Overconfidence<\/strong> in Golden Dome<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The logic seems simple: build a shield, stop a missile. But in nuclear strategy, things are never simple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">History shows us that when one country tries to build an impenetrable defense, adversaries respond by building <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/aerospace-defense\/trumps-golden-dome-plan-could-launch-new-era-weapons-space-2025-05-22\/\" title=\"\">more and smarter weapons<\/a><\/strong>\u2014missiles with multiple warheads, decoys, or maneuverable designs that render those defenses useless. In the Cold War, when the Soviet Union built interceptors around Moscow, the U.S. just aimed <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Multiple_independently_targetable_reentry_vehicle\" title=\"\">more warheads<\/a><\/strong> at the city. When the Soviet Union built anti-ballistic missile (ABM) systems around Moscow to defend against U.S. ICBMs, the U.S. countered by deploying\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?cs=0&amp;sca_esv=292513031035339b&amp;sxsrf=AE3TifPweufGFrIKr0flwBYDfJhxCONhrA%3A1749661714343&amp;q=MIRV&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=2ahUKEwjEm9Hn7emNAxVzGtAFHdtRGRMQxccNegQIAxAB&amp;mstk=AUtExfD1o1clp7AOOP13Lia_hCCiH38tfArWNae6AH285Di7jx-qpbL-T1cf-cbLmgonVLOJUhy8Uv3sOUnN2Plq8uiYKNdaBnJfZfbFzCZFSeneosHloBb-SL8MTBsdwxXbMDVTyEmqiGUp3DP8Vk1PdeocD1vXu1cG2E-HoOTmNQuioeyHnHLcQ-8xBUHGj1iprAEDOvRXNc9A54Pm2RzYNBYXMqDeaR4Ran75133xCVwp3Fk5Y6oBQ7VH8jZBRG37Le085YWcOLu4eYyoEScsgjo7&amp;csui=3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MIRV<\/a>s (Multiple Independently Targetable Reentry Vehicles).\u00a0This meant each U.S. ICBM could carry multiple warheads, each aimed at a different target, effectively overloading the ABM system and ensuring that the warheads could penetrate the defenses.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">A \u201cGolden Dome\u201d doesn\u2019t end the missile threat\u2014it <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/asiatimes.com\/2025\/05\/anti-missile-system-intensifies-us-china-nuclear-competition\/\" title=\"\">intensifies it<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\ud83c\udf0d Golden Dome Can Lead to Global Fallout<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Russia and China are already reacting. Their leaders have issued joint statements warning that Golden Dome would \u201cundermine global strategic stability\u201d and force them to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/trackingpeoplesdaily.substack.com\/p\/xi-and-putin-deepen-ties-to-combat\" title=\"\">counter<\/a><\/strong> the system with new offensive and space-based weapons. This is not just political rhetoric. China has ramped up its nuclear arsenal and already punished South Korea economically for installing U.S.-backed missile defenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Worse yet, the Golden Dome concept includes <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/aerospace.csis.org\/tag\/space-based-interceptors\/\" title=\"\">space-based interceptors<\/a><\/strong>, which could escalate the risk of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Space_warfare\" title=\"\">space warfare<\/a><\/strong>\u2014a chilling and dangerous new frontier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\ud83d\udd4a\ufe0f What We Could Do Instead<\/strong> of the Golden Dome<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Rather than pouring billions into a defense system that experts say is unlikely to work and likely to provoke more conflict, the U.S. could pursue <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/opinion\/national-security\/4965238-strategic-restraint-is-the-wisest-course-in-confronting-irans-nuclear-program\/\" title=\"\">measured, strategic restraint<\/a><\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\">Maintain modest regional defenses tailored to small-scale threats<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Open <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=diplomatic+channels&amp;oq=diplomatic+channels&amp;gs_lcrp=EgZjaHJvbWUyBggAEEUYOdIBBzgzNWowajSoAgCwAgA&amp;sourceid=chrome&amp;ie=UTF-8\" title=\"\">diplomatic channels<\/a><\/strong> with nuclear powers to prevent further arms escalation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\">Design transparent and limited systems that don\u2019t threaten other nations\u2019 deterrents<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Missile defense should not become a fantasy of invincibility.
