That\u2019s why I wrote a recent op-ed for the <em>Missouri Independent<\/em> titled <strong>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/missouriindependent.com\/2025\/05\/13\/why-cutting-public-broadcasting-huts-missouri-communities\/\" title=\"\">Why Cutting Public Broadcasting Hurts Missouri Communities<\/a>.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Public broadcasting is not just about <em>Sesame Street<\/em> or <em>All Things Considered<\/em>. For many Missourians\u2014especially in rural areas and under-resourced communities\u2014<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcwashington.com\/news\/national-international\/public-radio-stations-targeted-cuts-trump-provided-lifelines-listeners\/3905943\/\" title=\"\">public radio and television are a vital lifeline<\/a><\/strong>. They provide trusted news, cultural storytelling, educational programming for children, and critical information during emergencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">But now, that lifeline is under threat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The Trump administration has proposed <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/05\/ending-taxpayer-subsidization-of-biased-media\/\" title=\"\">eliminating all federal funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB)<\/a><\/strong>, a move that would devastate local NPR and PBS stations across the country, including right here in Missouri. While the Pentagon budget soars past $1 trillion, programs that cost Americans just <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/viewers-like-me\/communities\/\" title=\"\">$1.35 per year<\/a><\/strong>\u2014programs that inform, educate, and unify\u2014are being targeted for elimination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">This isn\u2019t just a budget issue. It\u2019s a values issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">In my op-ed, I write:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"\">\u201cWhen we spend more on missiles than on minds, we undermine both our security and our democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">This is why Peace Economy Project continues to advocate for a reallocation of public funds\u2014from militarism to human needs.
