Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s announcement includes the possible full reoccupation of the Gaza Strip, the call-up of tens of thousands of reservists, and increased control over the flow of international aid.

While the offensive is not expected to begin until after U.S. President Donald Trump’s Middle East visit concludes on May 16, the implications are already deeply concerning. In a controversial move, Israel’s cabinet also approved a plan to bypass the United Nations and other humanitarian organizations by funneling aid through private companies. This approach, according to the UN and major humanitarian agencies, violates core humanitarian principles and undermines neutral and impartial aid delivery. The UN has stated it will not participate in such a plan.

The people of Gaza, already under siege for over 17 years, face compounding food shortages, restricted medical access, and crumbling infrastructure.
