Musk is not only the CEO of a bidding company\u2014he is also serving as a <em>special government employee<\/em> in the Trump administration and was a major campaign donor to the president\u2019s 2024 reelection bid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">In a <a href=\"https:\/\/casar.house.gov\/sites\/evo-subsites\/casar.house.gov\/files\/evo-media-document\/golden-dome-ig-letter.pdf\" title=\"\">letter<\/a> to the Department of Defense\u2019s Acting Inspector General Steven Stebbins, lawmakers including <strong>Rep. Greg Casar (D-TX), Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA), and Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI)<\/strong> raised alarms about \u201cserious concerns of potential conflicts of interest,\u201d calling for a full investigation and, if necessary, a referral to the Department of Justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"\">\u201cThis is a textbook example of militarized cronyism,\u201d said Peace Economy Project Executive Director Katerina Canyon. \u201cInstead of serving the public, our government is funneling billions into private hands under the guise of \u2018defense.\u2019 This is why we call for deep scrutiny of military budgets\u2014because public resources should uplift people, not profit margins.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Critics say the Golden Dome project may bypass standard Pentagon acquisition protocols, as SpaceX has reportedly offered a \u201csubscription model\u201d to speed deployment\u2014allowing the government to pay for access to the system without fully owning it. Such a move not only weakens public oversight but could lock U.S. national defense into ongoing payments to a single corporation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The Pentagon, which has never passed a full audit, is now poised to receive a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/05\/02\/politics\/trump-budget-proposal-defense-spending\" title=\"\">record-breaking $1 trillion budget<\/a><\/strong>, even as urgent public needs\u2014from health care to education to climate resilience\u2014go underfunded.
