Perhaps the best known is the First World War, where in June 1914, the Arch-Duke of the Austro-Hungarian empire was killed by a Serbian student; Austro-Hungary presented a 10 point Memorandum demanding that Serbia dissolve Serbian national terror networks. Serbia agreed to 9 of the 10 points, where upon Austro-Hungary declared war. Russia came to Serbia\u2019s side which caused Germany to declare war on Russia, and its ally France.\u00a0<span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_191978288\"><span class=\"aQJ\">Five years later<\/span><\/span>\u00a0some 11 million soldiers and 7 million civilians had been killed, with another 23 million wounded, 41 million casualties in all.<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3518\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3519\"><span id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3520\">Could destruction of this magnitude happen again? It would certainly seem so, especially\u00a0unless efforts are made to quickly cool down the rhetoric. For the last three or four weeks, the standoff<span id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3521\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>between the USA and North Korea seemed quieter. Perhaps it had to do with the hurricanes, forest fires, American deaths in Niger, and so many other issues that command the news.<span id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3522\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Then in the last few days both sides have raised the sound level.<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3523\"><\/div>\n<ul id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3524\">\n<li id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3525\">\n<div id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3526\"><span id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3527\">The United States heard from two senior officials.<span id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3528\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>CIA chief\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3529\" lang=\"EN\">Mike Pompeo said North Korea might have only a few months left to perfect its nuclear capability, and that the United States must act as if Pyongyang has already reached the peak of the process of building nuclear bombs and missiles that can attack the United States.<span id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3530\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>And National Security Advisor\u00a0<a id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3531\" title=\"H.R. McMaster\" href=\"https:\/\/www.upi.com\/topic\/HR-McMaster\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/www.upi.com\/topic\/HR-McMaster\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1508960475717000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGodwyAMNeeiTR5SJORpwlrwW8-Lg\"><span id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3532\" style=\"color: #006699;\">H.R. McMaster<\/span><\/a>\u00a0said\u00a0<span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_191978289\"><span class=\"aQJ\">Thursday<\/span><\/span>\u00a0at the Foundation for Defense and Democracy\u00a0 that the White House finds North Korea&#8217;s approach to negotiations unacceptable. Trump is &#8220;not going to accept this regime threatening the United States with a nuclear weapon. He just won&#8217;t accept it.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3533\"><span id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3535\" lang=\"EN\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3536\"><\/div>\n<ul id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3537\">\n<li id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3538\">\n<div id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3539\"><span id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3540\">North Korea\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3541\" lang=\"EN\">spoke out\u00a0<span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_191978290\"><span class=\"aQJ\">on Monday<\/span><\/span>.\u00a0<span id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3542\">\u00a0<\/span>&#8220;In the midst of the endless, hysterical war madness from the invaders, the provokers, upon these conditions our proper position, to deliver an unimaginable blow at any time, is ready.<span id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3543\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Trump may speak of the &#8216;calm before the storm,&#8217; in an attempt and foolish calculation to frighten us, but rather it is the United States that is hobbling around in fear and despair.<span id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3544\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>The era of having faith in the United States has passed forever,&#8221;<\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3545\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3546\"><span id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3547\" lang=\"EN\">Pyongyang has a population of 2.6 million people. Seoul is much larger with a population of 10 million, and a metropolitan area of around 25 million. Overall North Korea is a country of 25.5 million and South Korea has just over 50 million.<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3548\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3549\"><span id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3550\" lang=\"EN\">Because Seoul is only 30 miles from the Demilitarized Zone which separates the two countries, Seoul is susceptible to rocket and artillery fire, as well as missiles. Somewhat reluctantly, the new South Korean administration has agreed to make the US provided THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defense) system operational.<span id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3551\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>However, THAAD won\u2019t help with the 1000s of North Korean lower altitude rocket and artillery systems, many of which are said to be able to fire and retreat into a hidden bunker within 75 seconds.<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3552\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3553\"><span id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3554\" lang=\"EN\">Raytheon Corporation has helped Israel build its Iron Dome system which claims a 90 percent success rate in shooting down rockets from Gaza. It now offers a similar system to the US Military called Sky Hunter. Raytheon<span id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3555\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>claims it could field the Sky Hunter system\u00a0<span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_191978291\"><span class=\"aQJ\">within 4 months<\/span><\/span>, and a system with all American parts\u00a0<span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_191978292\"><span class=\"aQJ\">within 2 years<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3556\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3557\"><b id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3558\"><span id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3559\" lang=\"EN\">What should happen next?<\/span><\/b><span id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3560\" lang=\"EN\"><span id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3561\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Conceivably the CIA could over throw Kim Jung-un in a quick, surreptitious operation. Given his obvious precautions and ruthless behavior, it is hard to believe such an adventure could happen smoothly or painlessly.<span id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3562\">\u00a0<\/span>Alternatively, the USA could launch one or more thermonuclear bombs at Pyongyang, thereby killing a massive number of civilians and soldiers, and destroying whatever moral standing we have left in the world.<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3563\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3564\"><span id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3565\" lang=\"EN\">There are other bizarre ideas such as the development of a \u201cgraphite \u201c bomb said to be able shut down power plants, transformer stations and transmission lines, thereby forcing North Korea into darkness.<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3566\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3567\"><span id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3568\" lang=\"EN\">In any of these cases, it is likely that North Korea would\u00a0rapidly respond\u00a0and probably invade the south, at the cost of far more deaths.<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3569\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3570\"><span id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3571\" lang=\"EN\">Would Kim Jung un attack first?<span id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3572\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>His rhetoric can be very obnoxious and he is thought to have carried out devastating attacks on relatives and friends. But is he self-delusional or suicidal?<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3573\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3574\"><span id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3575\">The Unit for the Study of Personality in Politics thought about Kim Jong-un in 2013 concluding he was \u201cgenerally congenial and cooperative, with no indication of remarkable aggressive tendencies or an unstable personality.\u201d Then in the spring of this year, despite lots of \u201cbellicose rhetoric and escalating provocations\u201d Kim was found, at worst, to have only \u201ca moderate predisposition to aggressive behavior.\u201d This does not sound like a person who would choose to submit his country to destruction by the US, a country with 4000 nuclear war heads in it arsenal.<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3576\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3577\" dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3578\">There have many articles attempting to evaluate President Trump from a psychological perspective. These result in words like \u201cambitious, self-serving, dominant, controlling, charismatic, narcissistic, even as there is a debate as to whether psychological professionals who have not interviewed him can ethically comment on his personality traits.<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3579\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3580\"><span id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3581\">Recognizing the complicated personalities of each leader, let those of us who care about peace, argue for the following:<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3582\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3583\"><span id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3584\">* Encourage Rex Tillerson and his team at the State Department to pursue a reduction in tension between our two countries.<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3585\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3586\"><span id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3587\">* Commit to restraining military exercises with South Korea and any other countries that North Korea perceives as antagonistic.<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3588\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3589\"><span id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3590\">* Clarify to North Korea that we have no interest in invading, damaging or otherwise upsetting their country, as long as they abide by normal international protocol.<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3591\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3592\"><span id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3593\">* Promise that we will work with other countries to remove United Nations sanctions, to provide humanitarian and economic assistance, and to promote social, economic and cultural exchange between the United States and North Korea.<\/span><\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3594\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3595\" dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"m_-2515198030092382924yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1508810502934_3596\">In sum, if North Korea can reduce its provocative language and actions, we\u00a0should do every thing we can to convince them that we will become a supportive friend.
