The layoffs are part of Boeing\u2019s decision, announced Wednesday,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/boeing.mediaroom.com\/2013-09-18-Boeing-to-Complete-Production-of-C-17-Globemaster-III-in-2015\" target=\"_blank\">to end production of its C-17 military cargo plane<\/a>s.<\/p>\n<p>About 3,000 employees work on the C-17 program companywide. Layoffs will begin early next year and continue until the last C-17 assembly facility, in Long Beach, Calif., closes in 2015, according to a company statement.<\/p>\n<p>The aircraft\u2019s forward nose and cargo door are built at Boeing in St. Louis. The C-17 program supports additional jobs at 650 suppliers in 44 states, according to Boeing officials.<\/p>\n<p>The company is completing production on 22 of the aircraft, but\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/washington\/blog\/fedbiz_daily\/2013\/09\/boeing-ending-32-year-c-17-program.html\" target=\"_blank\">delivered the last C-17 for the U.S. Air Force last week<\/a>, ending a 32-year program.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, Boeing CFO\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/stlouis\/search\/results?q=Greg%20Smith\">Greg Smith<\/a>\u00a0said at an investor event that\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/stlouis\/morning_call\/2013\/08\/boeing-considers-cutting-production-of.html\" target=\"_blank\">the company was working to sell the C-17 to overseas buyers<\/a>\u00a0and would decide its fate this year.<\/p>\n<p>Calling the end of C-17 production &#8220;a very difficult but necessary decision,&#8221;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/stlouis\/search\/results?q=Dennis%20Muilenburg\">Dennis Muilenburg<\/a>, president and CEO of Boeing Defense, Space &amp; Security, said in a statement Wednesday that the budgets of Boeing&#8217;s foreign customers &#8220;cannot support additional purchases in the timing required to keep the production line open.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What&#8217;s more, here in the United States the sequestration situation has created significant planning difficulties for our customers and the entire aerospace industry,&#8221; Muilenburg said.<\/p>\n<p>Boeing Defense, Space &amp; Security, based in Hazelwood, is a $33 billion business of Chicago-based\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/profiles\/company\/us\/il\/chicago\/boeing_co\/1325088\">Boeing Co<\/a>.
