{"id":2132,"date":"2013-09-16T14:56:46","date_gmt":"2013-09-16T20:56:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/peaceeconomyproject.org\/wordpress\/?p=2132"},"modified":"2013-09-16T14:56:46","modified_gmt":"2013-09-16T20:56:46","slug":"tomorrow-call-congress-to-stop-snapfood-stamp-cuts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/peaceeconomyproject.org\/wordpress\/tomorrow-call-congress-to-stop-snapfood-stamp-cuts\/","title":{"rendered":"Tomorrow: Call Congress to Stop SNAP\/Food Stamp Cuts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chn.org\/\">from the Coalition on Human Needs<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Stop the House bill to deny SNAP\/Food Stamps to 4-6 million people.<br \/>\nCall your Rep, toll-free:\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"tel:866-456-8824\" target=\"_blank\">866-456-8824<\/a>*\u00a0TOMORROW,\u00a0Tuesday, September 17.<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The U.S. House is expected to take up a bill this week that would cut SNAP by $40 billion over ten years.\u00a0 Every Member of Congress needs to hear that such an extreme proposal is simply beyond the pale.\u00a0 Food stamps have had bipartisan support for decades.\u00a0 (See\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/org.salsalabs.com\/dia\/track.jsp?v=2&amp;c=VzMBNsaDmlJ%2BCfPHPo1OvixE9FIihdwS\" target=\"_blank\"><em><strong>Stop Playing Politics with Hunger<\/strong><\/em><\/a>\u00a0by former Senators Bob Dole and Tom Daschle in the<strong><em>\u00a0Los Angeles Times\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>as an expression of that bipartisan support.)\u00a0 But now extremist members want toslash SNAP and hurt millions of children and their families, seniors, and poor adults without children.<\/p>\n<p><strong>*Tomorrow: Call\u00a0<a href=\"tel:866-456-8824\" target=\"_blank\">866-456-8824<\/a><\/strong>, listen to the recorded message and enter your zip code.\u00a0 You&#8217;ll be connected right to your Representative&#8217;s office.\u00a0 Let them know you&#8217;re a constituent; tell them your name and the town you are calling from.\u00a0 Tell them:<\/p>\n<p><strong>As your constituent, I urge you to vote against the extreme nutrition-only farm bill which would cut $40 billion from SNAP and deny assistance to 4-6 million poor people.\u00a0 This bill would be devastating to struggling Americans; by making more people hungry, it goes against many years of bipartisan support.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>What&#8217;s bad about this bill?<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0A\u00a0 few points:\u00a0 the bill would deny SNAP to millions of poor, jobless adults without children whose income averages only about one-fifth of the poverty line &#8211; about $2,500 a year.\u00a0 It would also end benefits for a whole family if a parent is not working at least 20 hours per week, even if her\/his child is only one year old, and even if unemployment remains high. And the bill gives states a REWARD for cutting off families &#8211; the state gets 50 percent of the reduced costs. Hundreds of thousands of children will lose free school meals.
