While this year the department relied on furloughs to deal with cuts, it seems next year it will rely on \u201creductions in force,\u201d or firings, which affect about 1 percent of the civilian force.<\/p>\n<p>The document is \u201cDraft\/Pre-Decisional.\u201d A spokeswoman didn\u2019t provide any comment to Bloomberg.<\/p>\n<p>To deal with this year\u2019s cuts, the DoD furloughed 85 percent of its civilian workers for about six days. Those\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/economy\/2013\/07\/08\/2264111\/sequestration-defense-furloughs\/\">set in for more than 650,000 workers<\/a>\u00a0in July, which amounted to a 20 percent reduction in pay through the end of September.<\/p>\n<p>Pentagon workers aren\u2019t the only ones whose jobs are at risk thanks to sequestration. Head Start programs have announced that\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/economy\/2013\/08\/19\/2487691\/sequestration-57000-children-head-start\/\">18,000 employees will experience lay offs or reduced pay next year<\/a>. At the same time, more than 57,000 low-income preschoolers will lose their slots in the program. Sequestration has claimed other victims:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/economy\/2013\/07\/12\/2293211\/affordable-housing-sequestration\/\">low-income people<\/a>\u00a0who need housing assistance,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/economy\/2013\/06\/03\/2093221\/domestic-violence-shelters-fear-the-ultimate-cost-from-sequestration\/\">domestic violence victims<\/a>seeking support,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/economy\/2013\/05\/01\/1946271\/budget-cuts-meals-on-wheels\/\">the home-bound elderly<\/a>\u00a0who need Meals on Wheels,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/economy\/2013\/07\/02\/2249251\/sequestration-slashes-benefits-for-the-long-term-unemployed\/\">the long-term unemployed<\/a>\u00a0seeking benefits, and others.<\/p>\n<p>Canceling sequestration now would bring back DoD positions, Head Start positions, and others: It could\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/economy\/2013\/07\/26\/2359781\/report-canceling-sequestration-could-add-up-to-16-million-jobs\/\">add as many as 1.6 million jobs<\/a>\u00a0to the economy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>by Bryce Covert, ThinkProgress click here for original article The Defense Department is facing\u00a0the possibility of firing at least 6,272 employees\u00a0if the automatic, across-the-board budget cuts known as sequestration aren\u2019t reversed, according to a planning document obtained by Bloomberg News.
