{"id":1566,"date":"2013-05-20T14:53:59","date_gmt":"2013-05-20T20:53:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/peaceeconomyproject.org\/wordpress\/?p=1566"},"modified":"2013-05-20T14:53:59","modified_gmt":"2013-05-20T20:53:59","slug":"automatic-budget-cuts-mean-no-checks-for-some-jobless-missourians","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/peaceeconomyproject.org\/wordpress\/automatic-budget-cuts-mean-no-checks-for-some-jobless-missourians\/","title":{"rendered":"Automatic budget cuts mean no checks for some jobless Missourians"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>by Elizabeth Crisp, St. Louis Post Dispatch<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.stltoday.com\/news\/local\/govt-and-politics\/sequestration-hits-long-term-unemployment-benefits-in-missouri\/article_f8484910-4270-5756-a5ea-f658bb6d7711.html\">click here for original article<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Missourians receiving unemployment benefits through a federally-funded program for people who have been out of work long-term won\u2019t receive payments for next week, the last week in July and a week in September because of the federal sequestration.<\/p>\n<p>Under the sequestration \u2014the automatic federal spending cuts that took effect in March\u2014states have had to cut their<a title=\"More on EUC\" href=\"http:\/\/labor.mo.gov\/DES\/extensions.asp\" target=\"_blank\">Emergency Unemployment Compensation program<\/a>\u00a0payouts by 10.7 percent through September.<\/p>\n<p>According to the\u00a0<a title=\"Labor story\" href=\"http:\/\/labor.mo.gov\/DES\/notices.asp#fedUIbenefits\" target=\"_blank\">Missouri Division of Employment Security<\/a>, withholding\u00a0Emergency Unemployment Compensation payments for three weeks here will reduce the program by about $15 million and meet the requirement.<\/p>\n<p>Missouri provides up to 20 weeks of unemployment compensation, and then residents who are still out of work can apply for the extended federal benefits for 21.6 additional weeks. The Emergency Unemployment Compensation program is set to expire in December.<\/p>\n<p>According to\u00a0<a title=\"Stateline 1\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pewstates.org\/news-room\/press-releases\/sequesters-impact-on-unemployment-insurance-85899465898\" target=\"_blank\">an analysis<\/a>\u00a0<a title=\"Stateline story\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pewstates.org\/projects\/stateline\/headlines\/delay-in-implementing-sequester-forces-deeper-unemployment-cuts-85899472118\" target=\"_blank\">from Stateline<\/a>, a Pew Charitable Trusts-backed news service that focuses on state government issues, 1.3 percent of Missouri\u2019s workforce was receiving the federally-funded Emergency Unemployment Compensation benefits in January.<\/p>\n<p>Missouri\u2019s unemployment rate has been on a steady decline since its 9.6 percent peak in August 2009.<\/p>\n<p>According to\u00a0<a title=\"DED news release\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ded.mo.gov\/News\/NewsArticle.aspx?NewsId=871\" target=\"_blank\">the Missouri Department of Economic Development<\/a>, the state\u2019s seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate fell to 6.6 percent last month.<\/p>\n<p><strong>AT A GLANCE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Missourians currently receiving benefits through the federal Emergency Unemployment Compensation program will not receive benefits for the weeks ending\u00a0<strong>June 1<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>July 27<\/strong>\u00a0and<strong>Sept. 21<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The sequestration reduction will not affect unemployed Missourians who are on the first 20 weeks state-funded benefits.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>by Elizabeth Crisp, St. Louis Post Dispatch click here for original article Missourians receiving unemployment benefits through a federally-funded program for people who have been out of work long-term won\u2019t receive payments for next week, the last week in July and a week in September because of the federal sequestration.
