Paul Ryan’s budget plan<\/a>\u00a0promises to “help grow our economy today.” Paul Krugman says that’s rubbish.<\/p>\n

The Nobel Prize-winning economist and New York Times columnist wrote in a blog post<\/a>\u00a0Wednesday that Ryan’s latest budget proposal would hurt the economy by slashing government spending, including repealing Obamacare’s health insurance expansion.<\/p>\n

“This particular ‘Path to Prosperity’ is, in the short to medium term, very much a path to continued depression,”\u00a0Krugman wrote<\/a>. “Luckily it isn’t going to happen.”<\/p>\n

Ryan’s proposal, which would\u00a0cut the budget<\/a>\u00a0by $4.6 trillion over 10 years,\u00a0slashes funding<\/a>\u00a0for government programs that help the poor, like Medicaid. Though the planis unlikely to become law<\/a>, if it were implemented,\u00a0it would shrink the U.S. economy and eliminate 2 million jobs<\/a>\u00a0in 2014 alone, according to an analysis by the left-leaning Economic Policy Institute.<\/p>\n

Krugman, who\u00a0called Ryan’s plan cruel<\/a>\u00a0yesterday,\u00a0has been criticizing Ryan for years<\/a>. But Ryan is fighting back.\u00a0He called Krugman’s economic doctrine<\/a>\u00a0“sugar-high economics” in a radio interview with Hugh Hewitt on Tuesday and said that Krugman’s argument that boosting government spending helps the economy is “obviously… not true.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
