If Congress fails to reach a budget deal by March 1st, how could the\u00a0automatic cuts<\/a>\u00a0affect Boeing?<\/a><\/p>\n

Senator Claire McCaskill says if the cuts kick in, the drop in defense spending across the board could actually help Boeing sell the Pentagon FA-18 fighter jets.<\/p>\n

\u201cIronically, the sequestration might work to the benefit of the FA-18 because it is much less expensive than the Joint Strike Fighter and has 85 percent of the capability,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI mean, I know it\u2019s hard for anybody to believe this, my fight for the FA-18. Yes, it\u2019s\u00a0St. Louis\"icon1<\/a>\u00a0and yes, it\u2019s jobs but if you\u2019re a fiscal conservative, you see the value of FA-18 because it is such a better value for taxpayers than the Joint Strike Fighter,\u201d McCaskill added.<\/p>\n

The Joint Strike fighter is made by Boeing\u2019s rival, Lockheed Martin. Hazelwood-based Boeing Defense employs just under 15,000 employees and last fall announced plans to cut ten percent of its\u00a0management positions\"icon1<\/a>\u00a0here by the end of 2012.<\/p>\n

McCaskill say she\u2019s\u00a0pessimistic<\/a>\u00a0about Republicans and\u00a0Democrats\"icon1<\/a>\u00a0working a budget compromise before the deadline to avoid the automatic cuts.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
