Why Humanitarian Aid, Not More Bombs, Is What Gaza Needs Now

Israel’s security cabinet has approved an expanded military offensive against Hamas in Gaza, a move that could further destabilize the region and intensify the already devastating humanitarian crisis facing Palestinians. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s announcement includes the possible full reoccupation of the Gaza Strip, the call-up of tens of thousands of reservists, and increased control over the flow of international aid.

While the offensive is not expected to begin until after U.S. President Donald Trump’s Middle East visit concludes on May 16, the implications are already deeply concerning. In a controversial move, Israel’s cabinet also approved a plan to bypass the United Nations and other humanitarian organizations by funneling aid through private companies. This approach, according to the UN and major humanitarian agencies, violates core humanitarian principles and undermines neutral and impartial aid delivery. The UN has stated it will not participate in such a plan.

The people of Gaza, already under siege for over 17 years, face compounding food shortages, restricted medical access, and crumbling infrastructure. The recent two-month blockade has brought the enclave to the brink of famine. Any military escalation will undoubtedly result in further civilian casualties and deepen the humanitarian emergency.

At the Peace Economy Project, we reject the framing of militarized “security” as a legitimate response to political crises. True security is built through diplomacy, demilitarization, and the protection of human rights—not by siege and occupation. We urge the international community, including U.S. officials, to demand a ceasefire and prioritize the protection of civilians above all else.

As Americans, we must also ask what role our own government plays. Continued U.S. military aid and diplomatic cover for Israeli military action must be critically examined. Our tax dollars should support peace, not prolong war.

Take Action:

  • Contact your elected officials and demand an immediate ceasefire and restoration of UN-led humanitarian aid to Gaza.
  • Support organizations providing independent humanitarian relief.
  • Join us in advocating for the redirection of U.S. military funding toward community and global well-being.
