What True Security Looks Like: Diplomacy, Not Deployment

Statement from the Peace Economy Project on Trump’s Proposal to Send U.S. Troops into Mexico

The Peace Economy Project strongly condemns former President Donald Trump’s recent confirmation that he proposed deploying U.S. military forces into Mexico to combat drug cartels—an idea rejected by Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum. This suggestion represents a dangerous escalation of militarism, a violation of Mexican sovereignty, and a disturbing disregard for the lessons of history. The focus shoulld be on diplomacy, not deployment.

Sending U.S. troops into another sovereign nation not only risks igniting further violence but also undermines decades of diplomatic work between the United States and Latin America. Military intervention has never solved the complex root causes of drug trafficking, poverty, or corruption. Instead, it often leads to destabilization, civilian casualties, and long-term resentment.

At Peace Economy Project, we believe true security is built through cooperation, justice, and sustained investment in human needs—not through force. Rather than pouring billions into endless war and militarized responses, we must redirect those resources toward addiction treatment, economic opportunity, education, and international partnerships that respect sovereignty and human dignity.

We stand with those in Mexico and the United States who reject this aggressive posture and call for policies rooted in peace, diplomacy, and community-based solutions.
