Public Statement by Katerina Canyon, Executive Director of Peace Economy Project:
The Peace Economy Project is deeply disappointed by the Senate’s decision to vote 72 to 11 to table Senate Resolution 504. This resolution was a crucial step towards shedding light on human rights practices and the use of U.S. military assistance in the context of the recent conflict in Gaza.
The resolution sought answers and accountability regarding the alleged violations of internationally recognized human rights, including the disproportionate impact of military operations on civilians and the denial of basic humanitarian needs. It aimed to ensure that U.S. assistance is not contributing to human rights abuses and is used in a manner consistent with the principles of international humanitarian law.
By tabling this resolution, the Senate has missed a vital opportunity to address serious concerns about the use of American-made munitions in densely populated areas and the devastating toll this conflict has taken on innocent civilians, including a staggering number of women and children.
The Peace Economy Project remains committed to advocating for transparency, accountability, and respect for human rights in U.S. foreign policy. We will continue to work tirelessly to promote a world where peace and justice are not mere ideals but are embedded in the actions and policies of nations.
We urge the Senate to reconsider its stance and take a stand for justice, accountability, and a thorough examination of the consequences of military assistance. It is not only a matter of moral responsibility but also a duty to the American taxpayers who deserve to know how their assistance is being used.
Sincerely,
Katerina Canyon
