Press Release: Peace Economy Project Announces Participation in the State of Public Safety in St. Louis Summit
St. Louis, MO, April 2, 2024 – The Peace Economy Project (PEP), a leading non-profit organization dedicated to promoting peace and economic justice, is proud to announce that its Executive Director, Katerina Canyon, will be participating in the upcoming State of Public Safety in St. Louis summit. The summit is scheduled to take place on April 27, 2024, from 10 AM to 2 PM at Tegeler Hall, Saint Louis University.
Amid rising concerns over crime and violence in St. Louis, the summit represents a critical opportunity for community leaders, residents, non-profits, and policymakers to come together and explore actionable solutions for creating a safer, more equitable city. Katerina Canyon, as the leader of PEP, will bring its perspective to the summit, advocating for a holistic approach to public safety that prioritizes community-led initiatives, economic development and job creation, enhanced health and social services, and comprehensive reform in law enforcement and criminal justice systems.
“True public safety extends beyond policing and incarceration. It’s about creating a community where every individual has the opportunity to thrive, free from the fear of violence,” said Ms. Canyon. “Investing in economic opportunities, accessible health and social services, and nondiscriminatory law enforcement practices are essential steps toward building a peaceful and prosperous St. Louis for all its residents.”
The Peace Economy Project has long championed the redirection of resources from military and defense spending to community-based programs that address the root causes of violence and inequality. By participating in the State of Public Safety in St. Louis summit, Ms. Canyon aims to highlight the critical role that economic and social investments play in fostering a secure environment where every community member can feel safe and valued.
The summit will feature a diverse panel of experts and leaders from various sectors, including law enforcement, healthcare, education, social services, and the non-profit community, each bringing their insights and proposals for addressing St. Louis’s public safety challenges. Ms. Canyon’s inclusion in the summit underscores the importance of incorporating peace economic principles into the broader conversation about public safety and community well-being.
