Amani Fellow 2023
The Peace Economy Project (PEP), in collaboration with the Organization for Black Struggle (OBS) and the Youth Council for Positive Development (YCPD) is seeking a Youth Organizer to fill a guaranteed funded one-year position as a community organizer. The Amani Fellow will be a shared organizer among the three organizations and work on issues common to all. Amani means peace in Swahili.
About the Organizations
The Peace Economy Project researches military spending, educates about the hazards of an unchecked military-industrial complex and advocates for conversion from a military- to a more stable, peace-based economy. The mission of the Youth Council for Positive Development is to and positive socialization in a culturally sensitive and safe environment. The intent is to develop youth who are critical thinkers who will be engaged in the transformation change of their community. The Organization for Black Struggle is committed to building a movement that fights for political empowerment, economic justice and the cultural dignity of the African American community, especially the Black working class. All three groups have a demonstrated commitment to equality, justice and peace.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
This position includes work on issues where the missions and projects of the organizations intersect. The magnitude of the U.S. military budget, currently at $768.2 billion, undermines the basic needs of its country’s citizens and is especially hurtful to low-incomes families and youth of color. The system creates poverty, food insecurity, homelessness, health disparities and a number of other inequities. The Amani Fellow will help to expose the pervasive militarization in our society including of U.S. police departments and how state violence contributes to community and domestic violence.
The Fellow will work to engage young people who are impacted by these issues to mobilize and organize to build power, improve their lives and transform their neighborhoods. Some of the activities include sponsoring educational forums, developing social media campaigns, working on lobbying campaigns aimed at elected officials, and producing compelling written and virtual information materials.

Salary and Benefits
This position is a 35-hour week at $15.00-$20.00 per hour and requires working some evenings and weekends. It includes ten paid vacation days and paid holidays. The Fellow will be reimbursed up to 4% of their annual salary for health insurance premium payment with appropriate documentation provided.
