Unpacking Bias: Understanding Privilege and Oppression
September 7th
8:30 a.m.-5 p.m.
St. Mark’s Episcopal Church (4714 Clifton Ave.)
Justice and Peace Shares (JPS) is offering a training that seeks to invigorate and inform area organizers and possibly serve as a catalyst for organizations to continue with internal work as they seek to build organizations based on anti-oppression principles. The day will include exploring privilege and oppression. We are all the intersection of multiple identities, and exploring where we (and our organizations) have power or don’t have power is an important part of justice work.
The intended outcomes for the proposed training:
- Increased personal awareness of the role oppression plays in participants’ perceptions and workplace interactions.
- Increased understanding of how issues related to diversity and inclusion manifest also within the organization and community partnerships.
The training will be led by Kira Banks. She is a clinical psychologist, who has been facilitating and training in the area of diversity and inclusion and intergroup dialogue work since 1998. Her philosophy is to encourage participants to not only gain personal awareness but to also understand cultural, institutional, and/or workplace dynamics of diversity. You can read a bit more about her previous work and philosophy one her website: www.kirabanks.com
