Non-profit goes local for annual fundraising concert
St. Louis, MO, April 6, 2010 – Locally based non-profit, the Peace Economy Project announced today a change to a 30-year-old St Louis tradition.
“Instead of bringing in a national recording artist for our annual spring concert, we decided it was time to give local talent a chance to shine,” explained the project’s director, Andy Heaslet.
Celia, The Northwoods, and Fire Dog will share the stage this Saturday night in South City’s intimate, indy-rock venue, Antarctica.
“We wanted artists whose lyrics tell stories that move you and performances that inspire – and all three of these bands do that and more,” raved Heaslet.
Celia is singer-songwriter who moved to St Louis from Lawrence, KS, following her dream to perform. The sunny artist has made a niche for herself in St Louis with regular shows for children as well as themed events like her annual “Yuletide Express” and an Easter performance of Jesus Christ Superstar accompanied by shadow puppeteers. While Celia has been known to play covers of tunes from Cabaret to Black Sabbath, she also has scores of uplifting and fun originals that delight audiences of all ages.
The Northwoods are a St Louis duo whose band name date back to a friendship formed at a childhood summer camp. Since then, they have blossomed into a talented team whose harmonies and rhythms call back to the likes of Simon and Garfunkel and James Taylor. While folk-originals butter this tandem’s bread, don’t be surprised to find them funk it up a little with impromptu jingles and classic sing-a-longs, as the performers’ stay down-to-earth in a way that listeners leave the show feeling like old friends of the band.
The show will end with rock/pop/funk trio, Fire Dog. Fire Dog, who frequently performs with Celia under the title of “Love-O-Rama,” simply beams positive energy. While traditionally louder than the bill’s other two artists, the songwriting ability and feel-good stage presence of this group make them an exciting performance to end a Saturday night.
This event will also feature a silent auction and is a fundraiser for the Peace Economy Project, a St Louis based group that advocates for responsible reduction of military spending in order to fund community needs.
The concert will be held at 8pm, Saturday April 10th, 2010 at Antarctica, 5226 Gravois. Doors open at 7:30pm. Tickets for the event are $15 in advance, $20 at the door and are available by online and at several local venues, all listed at www.PeaceEconomyProject.org or by calling (314) 726-6406.
